530 Steps, Butterflies, and the Ultimate Ice Cream Reward

If you are visiting La Fortuna, Costa Rica, tackling the famous La Fortuna Waterfall is an absolute must-do. But if you want to experience it the right way—mixing local insider tips, a little bit of physical prep, and some unexpected wedding magic—read on for the ultimate half-day adventure guide.

StepMaster Training Pays Off

Let’s talk about the legendary descent. The walk down to the base of the waterfall involves roughly 530 stairs. Many travelers warn you about the grueling climb back up, but if you’ve been secretly grinding away on the stepmaster at the gym, I have great news: it is way easier than you think!

Cruising past out-of-breath tourists while your legs are already conditioned from gym sessions feels like a secret superpower. You’ll reach the top feeling accomplished rather than entirely exhausted. (Thanks to my strength training at Arenal Fitness, the steps were easier than I remembered them to be!)

A Wedding at the Base & A Refreshing Swim

Once you make it down the metal staircases, the view opens up to a jaw-dropping, roaring column of water plunging into a deep turquoise pool. On this particular visit, it was surreal and magical to witness a wedding ceremony happening right at the base of the waterfall—what an unforgettable, high-energy spot to tie the knot! Brought to you by Blue Butterfly Weddings & Events.

After taking in the spray, you can go for a swim in the calmer edges of the river. The brisk, refreshing mountain water is the ultimate reward after the descent. This is the same river that flows down in the El Salto Rope Swing down the road about 2 kilometers aways.

Insider Perks: Horseback Riding & Gardens

Want to hack your itinerary? If you book a horseback riding tour to the falls through us, horseback riders get a free entrance to the waterfall, adding incredible value to your excursion.

While you're exploring the area, make sure to take time to enjoy the nearby orchid and butterfly gardens. Walking through fluttering butterflies and vibrant local blooms offers a peaceful, colorful transition after the raw power of the waterfall.

The Ultimate Post-Hike Treat & How to Book

No trip to the waterfall is complete without the grand finale: eating a celebratory ice cream right when you reach the top. Sitting back with a cold treat while looking out over the misty green landscape is pure bliss.
