How Much to Tip in Costa Rica

How Much to Tip in Costa Rica

Tipping Guidlines

Tipping in Costa Rica can be a bit different from other countries, as service charges are often included in the bill at restaurants. However, it is still a good idea to tip for excellent service or for services not covered by the standard service charge. Here are some tips on tipping in Costa Rica:

Restaurants: A 10% service charge is usually included in the bill at most restaurants. If the service was exceptional or you received special attention from the staff, you can leave an additional tip of 5-10%. If the service charge is not included, a 10-15% tip is considered standard.

Hotels: For hotel staff, such as bellhops or porters, it is customary to tip around $1-2 per bag. Housekeeping staff can be tipped $1-2 per day, while hotel concierges who provide helpful information or make reservations for you can be tipped $5-10, depending on the level of service.

Tour Guides: For tour guides, it is customary to tip around $5-10 per person for a full-day tour, and $2-5 for a half-day tour. If you have a private guide or driver, you may consider tipping more, depending on the quality of service and your satisfaction.

Taxi Drivers: Tipping taxi drivers is not customary in Costa Rica, but you can round up the fare or tip a small amount (around 5%) for excellent service or if the driver goes out of their way to help you.

Spa Services: For spa services, such as massages or beauty treatments, a 10-15% tip is considered standard if the service charge is not included in the bill.

Airport Shuttle Drivers: For airport shuttle drivers, a tip of $1-2 per bag is appropriate.

Bars: When ordering drinks at a bar, tipping is not mandatory, but you can leave the change or tip around 5-10% for exceptional service.

Remember that tipping is ultimately a personal decision and should be based on the quality of service you receive. Costa Ricans are known for their warm and friendly nature, so a genuine thank you and a smile can also go a long way in showing your appreciation.
